Frank, Hank, & Fred: Wright, Richardson, & the Olmstead in Buffalo
Buffalo’s ascendance in the 19th century was marked not only by the usual economic and population explosion and the amassing of wealth and influence, but by a “will to greatness” among its leaders that became evident after the Civil War and continued strongly into the early 20th century. The nation’s best designers were drawn to Buffalo and did some of their best work here.

Frederick Law Olmsted, co-designer of Central Park and the greatest American landscape architect, was brought to the city to design a park system in 1868, whereupon he was united with Henry Hobson Richardson in what was to be the first of many collaborations in the Picturesque vein, at the Buffalo State Hospital.

Olmsted also envisioned elegant residential neighborhoods rising around his parks and parkways. Indeed, that is where Frank Lloyd Wright’s clients had him build their houses, five in all. You’ll see all of this on a tour possible in only one American city: Buffalo.
