Picturesque Masterpiece: Olmsted & Richardson's Buffalo State Hospital
In domestic, commercial, and institutional architecture, Henry Hobson Richardson’s work was path-breaking. He died young, but upon his death he was recognized as the greatest American architect the world over. The Buffalo State Hospital was his first major commission, the launching pad for his career and the style that became known as Richardsonian Romanesque. It is the largest building Richardson ever designed and is complemented with landscaping by Frederick Law Olmsted. Despite recent appropriations to restore the buildings, this National Historic Landmark continues to deteriorate, with some walls literally falling down. What’s up?
