Picturesque Parks of Frederick Law Olmsted
Frederick Law Olmsted and his partner Calvert Vaux (Olmsted became far more famous) designed the epic landscapes of the American city. After designing Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and New York’s Central Park, Olmsted & Vaux were called upon to design parks for Buffalo. Here Olmsted first devised parkways to link parks together, and thereby launched the city planning stage of his career.

You’ll traverse some of his parkways and get an in-depth look at his best landscapes in Delaware, Cazenovia, and South parks, and gain insight into what constitutes a pleasing view and an ordinary one. These were principles of the Picturesque movement (first seen in Buffalo at the starting point for our tour, Forest lawn Cemetery) that Olmsted was implementing on a grand scale.

You’ll appreciate how effective and important his designs are and while they are still relevant today.
